This portrait depicts Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537–1598), one of the three samurai leaders that unified Japan at the end of the 1500s and a significant patron of the arts.

Hideyoshi is depicted in the typical iconography of his deification as Toyokuni Daimyojin. He is seated quietly on a mat and dressed in full aristocratic attire, reflecting his rise from humble origins as a foot soldier to a powerful general. The upper section features bamboo blinds and hanging curtains, while the wall in the background bears a landscape painting in black India ink, rendered in the meticulous detail.

This piece is thought to be the work of a highly accomplished artist, and the upper part of the painting includes compliments from two of the most renowned Zen monks of the time.

This portrait was donated to Saikyōji Temple in 1598 by Hideyoshi’s retainer, Nagatoshi Yamanaka (1547–1607), on the third anniversary of Hideyoshi’s death. Nagatoshi had deep ties to Saikyōji Temple and, together with his wife and the mother of fellow samurai Gyōbu Ōtani (1559–1600), devoted himself to the temple’s restoration.

Later that year, Nagatoshi also contributed to the construction of Saikyōji’s guest house by relocating one of the buildings from Hideyoshi’s Fushimi Momoyama Castle to Saikyōji Temple. This building is now known as the Momoyama Palace.
