This work is an example of a folding fan inscribed with the Lotus Sutra.

The Lotus Sutra is a key Buddhist scripture and states that all living beings possess the Buddha nature and can attain enlightenment.

The crease in the center of the fan indicates that the paper was originally folded in half and glued together using the “butterfly binding” method, in which folded sheets of paper are pasted together.

The painting depicts two aristocrats facing each other with a garden spring in the background and is rendered with the soft brushstrokes and decorative style of Yamato-e, a Japanese painting style popular during the Heian period (794–1185).

The colorful pigments and gold leaf imbue the painting with elegance and a hint of solemnity.

Produced during the Heian period, this work exemplifies the refined aesthetics and delicate techniques of the time.

It has been carefully preserved at Saikyōji Temple as an outstanding example of Heian-period art.
