This sacred image is a portrait of Zhiyi, also known as Tiantai Dasihi (538–597), a Chinese monk and founder of the Tiantai School of Buddhism, which became Tendai Buddhism in Japan. A high priest from the Sui dynasty (581–618), Zhiyi is counted among the three great founders of the Tiantai school and is credited with codifying the doctrines of Tendai Buddhism.

This image is a very rare depiction of Zhiyi, showing him preaching while holding a ceremonial scepter called a nyoi in his right hand. With his shoes removed and neatly arranged by his feet, Zhiyi sits calmly in a large chair, conveying a sense of serenity and dignity.

A signature at the bottom left of the painting indicates that the icon was painted by the artist Zhang Sixun from China’s Southern Song dynasty (1127–1279). Saikyōji Temple is counted among the three head temples of Tendai Buddhism in Japan, alongside Enryakuji Temple and Miidera Temple. As the head temple of the Shinsei branch of the Tendai school, Saikyōji has long venerated this important image of Zhiyi, preserving it as a testament to the development of Tendai Buddhism in Japan.
