This image depicts Shakyamuni Buddha standing on a lotus pedestal. His body leans slightly forward and one of his legs gently steps to the side. The graceful posture expresses both elegance and compassion, as he descends from his pedestal to approach humanity.

A halo surrounds Shakyamuni Buddha, and the small, richly colored depictions of other buddhas that encircle him further enhance the majesty of the scene. Shakyamuni Buddha holds an iron bowl in both hands in a pose influenced by paintings from Song dynasty (960–1279) China. This depiction is extremely rare in Japanese Buddhist art, making this work an exceptional example within Kamakura-period (1185–1333) iconography.

This image is also called the Jihatsu Shaka Nyorai, meaning “Shakyamuni Buddha holding an iron bowl.” Revered for centuries, it has been carefully preserved to the present day as a rare and important relic of Buddhist devotion.
