This painting dates to the Kamakura period (1185–1333) and is based on a Yuan-dynasty (1279–1368) work from China. It depicts Amitabha Buddha standing majestically on top of his lotus pedestal rather than his usual pose of seated meditation. He stands in a fumiwari rendai pose with his right hand raised and left hand lowered in a raigō (welcoming) mudra as light shines from his head, conveying a sense of awe and solemnity. He wears red vestments patterned with gold paint, producing a graceful balance of splendor and serenity.

At Saikyōji Temple, this painting is also called the Amida Dokuson (“Amitabha, the only one worthy of honor”) and Kureharu no Mida (“Amitabha of the Red Wave”) and has been preserved with great care. The reverse side of the painting bears the inscription “Under the guidance of Shingen Shōnin, the eighth abbot of Saikyōji Temple, the image was restored and a consecration ceremony was performed on the twenty-first day of the fourth month in the fifth year of Tenshō (1577).” This inscription attests to the care devoted to the painting over the centuries at Saikyōji Temple.
