This cast bell, hanging in the bell tower next to the Main Hall, measures 115.5 cm in height and 73.5 cm in diameter.
It exhibits an elegant design characteristic of Heian period (794–1185) temple bells.
Chi-no-ma horizontal bands divide the upper part of the bell into four sections, with the canon and striking point positioned at right angles. It features arabesque patterns cast on the upper band and floating clouds on the lower band.
Although unsigned, it is an exceptional example of a temple bell from the period. Temple tradition tells us this may have been the signal bell of Akechi Mitsuhide‘s Sakamoto Castle.
