Located on the western side of the grounds, between the Guest Hall and the New Shoin, Kanrantei sits adjacent to the Guest Hall Garden, a strolling garden featuring a pond believed to have been created in the mid-Edo period (1603–1868).
This single-story building features a roof covered in sangawarabuki pantiles, with the south side featuring a hip-and-gable structure, and the north side a gable roof.
The roof, known as a mukuri-yane camber roof, features convex curves that work together to create an impression of gentleness.
The layout consists of 2 rooms both featuring shelves, the larger of which also contains an alcove. The interior design produces a sophisticated sukiya-style elegance, featuring cinnabar sand-coated walls, non-penetrating tie beams retaining bark texture on the edges, and board transoms decorated with wave patterns.
At the entrance hangs a plate of calligraphy written by Shinra, the 42nd chief abbot of Saikyo-ji.
