This is the principal image enshrined on the dais in the Main Hall of Saikyo-ji Temple.
It is said to have been relocated in 1574 from Jofuku-ji Temple in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture.
Crafted in the yosegi-zukuri technique, with lacquer and gold leaf and engraved eyes, it is a large statue classified from its size as a jorokuzo, or a seated statue around 2.4 meters high.
The hands form the Amida meditation mudra in front of the stomach, and it is seated in the lotus position on a lotus pedestal.
The statue features a large ushnisha protrusion on the top of the head, a nearly square round face with a golden hue, half-closed long eyes, and beautifully arched eyebrows.
The body has broad shoulders, with moderately long arms extending to the elbows, and short legs. These features of the Jocho style, which became popular during the late Heian period (794–1185), cleverly contribute an illusion of balanced proportion to a front view of this huge structure.
It is a rare example of a jorokuzo statue retaining the boat-shaped hiten kohai halo with heavenly beings that was typical of the period, making it one of Shiga Prefecture’s representative statues of Amitabha and a magnificent statue appropriate as the principal image of a grand temple.
