The Main Hall of Saikyo-ji Temple was rebuilt in 1739 , replacing a temporary main hall constructed in 1574.
It features a tiled hip-and-gable roof. The front, center section has paneled wooden doors with openwork carvings on their upper parts, and the ends have shitomido wooden shutters with crisscross lattices.
A pent roof is set in the front and center, with charming monkey figurines adorning the eave ends.
The frog-leg struts have carvings of monkeys, birds, rabbits, horses, etc., while the sides consist of shitomido, paneled wooden doors, and walls with katoumado windows (windows with a special curvilinear top part).
There is a hall at the rear (ihaido; mortuary chapel), which once enshrined the standing statue of Sho-Kannon Bosatsu (Aryavalokitesvara), designated as an Important Cultural Property.
Inside, a central dais accommodates the principal image, a seated statue of Amida Buddha(Amitabha).
The four pillars around the dais are richly colored, with intricate carvings on the transoms and frog-leg struts.
The side sanctuaries house Prince Shotoku and high monks associated with the Tendai Order, such as Ganzan Daishi and Eshin Sozu. The outer sanctuary enshrines a statue of the White-handed Monkey, known for protecting Shinsei Shonin from religious persecution during an uprising in 1493.
As an excellent example of early modern Buddhist architecture, this structure stands proudly as the Main Hall of Saikyo-ji Temple.
