Located on the east side of the Main Hall, Syokyozo is a two-story mud-walled storehouse with a gable roof and sangawarabuki pantile roofing.
It was constructed in May 1879 to house over 200 boxes of sacred texts donated to Saikyo-ji by Inaoka Gyojo, the head priest of Shokyo-bo in the northern valley of Saito area on Mt. Hiei.
The storehouse is built on a flat surface created by cutting into the slope and fortifying it with natural stone.
The front features an eave with a mukuri-yane rounded roof and a plastered door as the entrance. The pillars and undersides of the eaves are coated with plaster, displaying early Meiji period (1868–1912) design elements such as decorated arched beams on the eave and exaggerated frog-leg struts in inflexed arch shape.
The upper portion of the exterior walls is covered in white plaster, with the lower sections finished with vertical board paneling.
The plaster helps prevent the spread of fire, and the cut stone foundation illustrates the storehouse style established in the early modern period, resulting in a simple yet serene structure.
