This secret statue of the Medicine Buddha is enshrined in the miniature shrine in the butsuma room to the west of Kenjin-No-Ma in the Guest Hall. It is only unveiled once a year in early February, during a memorial service on Setsubun Day.
Originally, it belonged to Hossho-ji Temple, known as the “Temple of Kings.” The temple featured structures like an octagonal nine-story pagoda believed to be around 80 meters tall. In 1590, by imperial order from Emperor Go-Yozei, Saikyo-ji Temple’s ninth generation head priest Shinchi brought this statue to Saikyo-ji following the temple’s merger with Hossho-ji. As a result, a plaque bearing “Hossho-ji” hangs in the room.
The statue is made of wood with lacquer and gold leaf and has engraved eyes. It features a high ushnisha protrusion on the top of the head, with eyes, nose, and mouth brought together in the center of a round face, creating a graceful yet determined impression.
The neck is thick and the broad shoulders are adorned with monastic robes, and it is seated in the lotus position.
The mudra hand gesture has both elbows raised high above the knees, with a medicine jar placed on the left palm in front of the chest, while the right hand approaches it with outstretched fingers.
This statue is considered a representative example of a type of early Kamakura (1185–1333) period Buddhist sculpture that still maintained many of the stylistic traits of the late Heian period (794–1185).
